Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who put together this web site and why?
This web site is hosted by UNITE HERE Local 2, the union of hotel and hospitality workers. We’re working with Brisbane residents who have their own concerns about this project, from many different angles, and who share our concerns about the potential environmental impacts of the project.
We’re very concerned about what the working conditions would be like for the people working in the hotels and restaurants proposed for the Baylands project. How healthy it would be for anyone to work in these buildings for eight hours a day, every day, under the current plans?
And finally: thousands of us live within a five-mile radius of the project, and we already struggle to live here on our salaries. What will happen to us when a project brings in an estimated 19,000 workers but only 2,200 housing units? What will happen to working-class people all over southern San Francisco, Daly City, and South San Francisco? How will any of us afford to stay in our homes?
There are lots of other people in and around Brisbane who have other serious concerns about this project.
Q. What are you asking for?
The Brisbane City Council should reject the current proposal from the Baylands Development Company. And the developer should go back to the drawing board and come back to the community with a proposal that is safe, affordable, and reasonable.
Q. How can I get involved?
Make your voice count! Click here to send a note to the City Council, expressing your concerns. And sign up on this form to give us your email address/phone number if you want to talk further or if you’d like to learn more.
